The Korean Wave (Hallyu), spearheaded by Korean music, shows no signs of dying down. In Paris, the city of art, not only K-pop but various genres of K-music are enjoying popularity.
A prime example is Una, a mezzo-soprano who majored in authentic classical vocal music at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and the Nuremberg State University of Music in Germany, and who also worked as an opera singer.
Crossing over various genres from classical to popera, chanson, and jazz, Una is actively performing as a classical crossover singer. In Korea, she received much love from the public for singing "So in Love," the theme song for the popular 2005 SBS drama Love Story in Harvard. In addition, she has released studio albums and numerous singles, holding performances in cities like New York and London.
Currently residing in Paris, France, and working to create music that bridges the East and the West, Una recently announced that she is connecting with fans at home and abroad through the release of a new album featuring a remastered version of "Arirang."
Una's music is consistently praised as a genre-defying "classical crossover genre." She showcases a diverse repertoire, combining classical pieces, including opera, with pop music styles, and conversely interpreting pop music using classical or vocal techniques. As a registered member of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), Una also continues her musical endeavors by including songs she has personally written and composed in her albums.
Her new album "Arirang," remastered in Paris, is characterized by reflecting minimal modern trends while preserving the unique colors of Arirang. The climax in the second half was inspired by the Spanish "Bolero."
The Bolero is a Spanish dance that developed from the seguidilla at the end of the 18th century. Originating from its lively movements, its most prominent feature is a uniquely subdivided triple meter, and it spread widely across Europe with the rise of Western Romanticism in the 19th century. In other words, Una's Arirang combines the musical elements of various countries, including Korea, France, and Spain.
It has been reborn as a crossover Arirang, blending Western classical orchestral melodies and the Spanish Bolero with the unique Arirang melody that anyone can sing along to. Una stated, "I am expressing various musical colors without losing my identity as a Korean," adding, "I am carrying out my activities with pride and dignity in our traditional music."
Una's "Arirang," which allows listeners to experience both the East and the West, is available not only on domestic music platforms but also internationally on platforms such as Amazon Music in France, Apple Music, and Spotify.
